Evelyn Castro is Nevada’s first Student Loan
Ombudsman, serving within the State Treasurer’s Office as a trusted advocate
for student loan borrowers. In this role, she provides individualized guidance
to students, parents, and graduates navigating financial aid and student loan
repayment, and works to resolve complaints related to federal and private
student loans. Evelyn also engages in outreach and education to help Nevadans
make informed decisions about borrowing, repayment options, and avoiding scams.
Evelyn brings a deep understanding of lending systems and
borrower challenges, shaped by a diverse career in public service, legal
assistance, and financial services. Prior to her appointment as Ombudsman, she
oversaw the Governor Guinn Millennium Scholarship as a Program
Officer, ensuring the financial integrity of the trust fund and managing
student eligibility. Earlier in her career, she served as a Community
Resource Manager for a national nonprofit, worked as a paralegal supporting
homeowners with mortgage relief, and was a licensed mortgage loan
officer—experience that gives her a unique perspective on how debt affects
everyday lives.
Evelyn holds a Bachelor’s degree in Business
Administration from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and
a Master's in Business Administration from Keller Graduate School of Management. She is committed to
making student loan assistance more accessible, transparent, and responsive to
the real needs of Nevada borrowers.
